Genome, the Queen Bee of the 'Omes

In the battle of the 'omes, one 'ome towers over all others.

According to the blog Seqonomics, the term 'genome' is by far the most popular of the 'omes, as determined by the number of hits on Google and PubMed.

On Google, 'genome' has received 63.7 million hits, more than 10 times the number of hits for the next most popular 'ome term, 'proteome,' which has had 6.35 million hits, Seqonomics says, though it does not indicate the time period covered.

Based on PubMed hits, 'genome' and 'proteome'once again are number 1 and 2, but the gap between the two is even greater. 'Genome' received 816,085 hits, more than 36 times the 22,480 hits 'proteome' received.

Next most-popular on both Google and PubMed is 'transcriptome,' with 2.37 million hits on Google and 11,310 hits on PubMed.

So who were the uncool kids, so to speak? According to Google, 'secretome' would have been left out of the party with just 149,000 hits. The term has had 683 hit on PubMed. Meanwhile, PubMed suggests 'reactome' barely causes a reaction in anyone and had just 100 hits, although the term saw more lovin' on Google, where it has received 782,000 hits, making it the fifth-most popular out of 14 'ome terms, Seqonomics adds.
