New, non-invasive tests may be able to establish paternity during pregnancy, reports The New York Times. These tests use blood samples from the pregnant woman and possible father — thus they do not carry the small miscarriage risk associated with amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling — and analyze fragments of fetal DNA found in the pregnant woman's blood. The Times notes that two companies, Ravgen and Natera, offer such tests, but neither firm has the certification needed for use in custody cases.
