The successful candidate will be assigned to the Meningitis and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch (MVPDB) at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA. The candidate will provide technical and intellectual support for whole genome sequencing analysis and genome-based typing systems to improve molecular detection of meningitis and pertussis pathogens.
SCOPE OF WORK
The services will include performing analysis of genome sequences, managing the genome sequence data, developing and implementing of cutting edge tools for genome sequence analysis, and providing support for epidemiological investigations. Documentation of daily work with good laboratory practice compliance is required. Data analysis, management, and report production skills are preferred. Incumbent will provide additional support for program activities as required including laboratory support for emergency response activities.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Function 1: Perform quality control, assembly, annotation and analysis of pathogen genome sequences and management of genome sequence files and database including uploads to NCBI or other similar sequence data banks (25%)
Function2: Develop and implement cutting edge tools for whole genome sequence analysis and prepare standard operating procedures for bioinformatics analyses (30%)
Function 3: Work with molecular microbiologists in the laboratory to address public health-related scientific questions and develop new systems to improve surveillance (30%)
Function 4: Prepare and deliver clear and concise reports and presentations for supervisors, colleagues, and collaborators, at internal and external (scientific) meetings (10%)
Function 5: Participate in other laboratory activities as necessary (5%)
Master’s Degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or any other related majors.
Required: Demonstrated experience with bioinformatics, analysis, and bioinformatics analytical tools.
Desirable: Research background on whole genome analysis
Required: Proficient in the use of various whole genome analysis tools. Skills in assembly, annotation, and analysis of genomic data generated by Illuminar, Pacbio and other sequencing platform.
