Pacific Biosciences is seeking a disciplined electrical engineer with management experience to lead a small group that designs complex, multi-functional PCBAs and delivers firmware for our DNA sequencer instruments. In addition to managing the team, this position requires hands-on board development. Therefore, good digital design skills, FPGA knowledge, and experience with high-speed signal processing are essential. A strong work ethic and commitment to solid documentation practices are a must. Work is fast paced and multifaceted, touching on many additional engineering disciplines: thermal, electromechanical, chemical/biological, optical, and software. The perfect candidate will be comfortable shifting priorities quickly and getting hands-on to diagnose and solve technical issues. They must be comfortable working closely with others and giving/receiving constructive design feedback.
As a manager, the candidate will be responsible the small team that delivers all of Pacific Biosciences PCBAs, including firmware. The candidate will work on cross-functional teams to gather requirements, write specifications and test plans, deliver on designs, work with external layout houses, bring up and debug boards, work with integration teams, and transition the designs to manufacturing. While the role will largely focus on upcoming products, there is also a need to support manufacturing, field service, and internal users. Additionally, the candidate will need to work with our algorithm team to specify the compute hardware that is included with the instruments.
Bachelors and/or Masters in Electrical Engineering or other related discipline
Minimum of 5 years of industry or equivalent work experience
Experience managing or supervising small teams
Proficiency with OrCAD schematic capture
Experience managing external vendors
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills in order to be able to effectively interface with software, hardware, quality and manufacturing teams
Design experience with motion control (servos, steppers, encoders) is strongly desired
FPGA design and debug experience is strongly desired
Pacific Biosciences’ mission is to transform the way humankind acquires, processes and interprets data from living systems through the design, development and commercialization of innovative tools for biological research. The company has developed a novel approach to studying the synthesis and regulation of DNA, RNA and protein. Combining recent advances in nanofabrication, biochemistry, molecular biology, surface chemistry and optics, Pacific Biosciences has created a powerful technology platform called single molecule, real-time, or SMRT™, technology. SMRT technology enables real-time analysis of biomolecules with single molecule resolution, which has the potential to transform the understanding of biological systems by providing a window into these systems that has not previously been open for scientific study.
