Job Description: 

NewGene is an expanding molecular diagnostics company that provides clinical laboratory services to the NHS and private sector. The company is jointly owned by the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle University and is located close to Newcastle city centre, at the Centre for Life, alongside academics from the Institute of Genetic Medicine and clinical teams from the Northern Genetics Service.

The company is in its 6th year of operation and is seeking to expand and strengthen its management team through the appointment of a laboratory manager who will have supervisory responsibility over 6 staff.

The post holder will be highly experienced in clinical laboratory techniques preferably in a management / supervisory position. A background in human genetics is desirable. He/she will be capable of supervising, directing and leading technical laboratory staff of varying abilities and backgrounds. A high degree of organisational skills, personal drive, initiative and a “can do attitude” are required to achieve company output targets while maintaining the highest standards of service quality and customer satisfaction.

Exposure to, or at least knowledge of, high throughput / next generation gene sequencing methods would be an advantage. This post offers the opportunity to work with modern molecular technology, such as next generation sequencing and MALDI-TOF platforms.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the successful applicant will take specific responsibility for the production and laboratory functions of the company. In addition, he/she will work closely with the Scientific Director, the Business Development Director and the Administration Manager in areas such as new assay development, technical troubleshooting, costings, purchasing etc.
