Job Description: 

The Research Associate will assist in a newly-funded project within the Emerging Technologies Section aimed at utilizing next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques to improve efficiency for the personnel accounting mission, and will assist in the development, planning, organization and execution of original research projects and programs to develop innovative advances in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA (nDNA)-based typing.

Primary duties to include:
• Generation, analysis, interpretation, and organization of large amounts of data with special attention to forensic quality standards.
• Evaluation of bioinformatic tools and workflows in combination with data generated from a variety of enrichment, library preparation, and NGS sequencing methods.
• Recommend, direct, and implement laboratory process changes meant to impact and improve data quality and/or analysis.
• Preparation and delivery of posters and oral presentations on research projects at seminars, workshops, professional meetings, symposia, etc.
• Preparation, review, and revision of technical reports and manuscripts for publication.

Requirements: 

• A Master's degree in forensic science, or one of the biological or biomedical sciences with knowledge in molecular biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics, population biology, statistics, or forensic science.

•Two years of experience; or a Doctorate degree in chemistry, biochemistry or molecular biology, or in related scientific field with specific knowledge and skills in the latter areas or in cell biology, genetics, population biology statistics, general medical technology and forensic science.

•Individuals with next generation sequencing experience are encouraged to apply.

•Individual must be able to successfully complete a National Agency Check With Inquiries (NAC-I) background investigation.

The position does not require a security clearance but the individual may be required to obtain a government security clearance at a future date so ability to obtain a clearance is required. Please indicate Citizenship and if a background check is acceptable to you in the cover letter.
