We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Systems Administrator to join the Systems Group at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
This position is in the Compute and Virtualization team which is responsible for EBI's central computing services including email, ftp, virtual infrastructures, clouds and compute.
The EBI maintains clusters totalling 1,500 nodes which are used for production services and by several hundred developers and researchers. Additionally, EBI has more than 1000 servers and VMs, mostly RHEL6 hosted on VMware and several pilot projects in progress utilising cloud technologies to provide secure, flexible infrastructure to external users, close to the EBI's data resources.
There will also be the opportunity to get involved in projects that offer opportunities to learn new skills.
The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data-storage, analysis and representation.
The successful applicant will have a degree in Computer Science or have equivalent work experience and the ability to work effectively in English. In addition the post-holder requires as many of the following skills and experience as possible:
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux administration
• IBM Platform LSF batch processing
• Puppet configuration management
• Virtualization platform administration (VMware, vSphere 5.1/open VZ)
• Cloud management administration (VMware vCloud/OpenStack/OpenQRM)
• nagios/ganglia monitoring
• python/perl/shell scripting
• ftp server administration
Personal organisation, the ability to work effectively in a team environment, time management, self-direction, excellent communication skills and the desire to learn and keep up with technology advances are essential.
