Job Description: 

The Sr. Electrical Engineer will work in our Mountain View, CA engineering facility and make significant contributions to architecture, prototyping and product design of new fluid handling systems for genome sequencing. Successful candidates will have a mix of skills in problem solving, hands-on design and prototyping, creativity, collaboration and solid product development experience. Background in life sciences, liquid handling systems, robotics, instrumentation and capital equipment design are a plus.


• Work both independently and collaboratively to develop system electrical and electronic architectures for liquid handling equipment.
• Assume responsibility for entire subsystems from concept into production.
• Develop and implement system-wide sensor architecture for high reliability operation and diagnostics.
• Design and develop embedded controller using PIC or other microprocessor.
• Collaborate with software group to create embedded firmware for real time state machine control of liquid handling system.
• Work closely with contract manufacturer to develop and implement modular component interconnect and power distribution architecture to maximize manufacturability and serviceability.
• Play a critical role in regulatory compliance testing and certification.
• Work with vendors to select components using your experience with sensors (flow, temperature, pressure), communications (bus controllers), interconnect (cables, connectors, cable routing components), liquid handling components (pumps, valves), and precision motion components (motors, encoders).
• Build prototype systems and perform extensive debug and optimization in a laboratory environment.
• Work with technicians to develop life testing and failure analysis of components and assemblies.
• Work with supply chain to release the parts and assemblies into sustainable manufacturing environments.
• Prepare and make presentations.



• BS in electrical engineering or closely-related discipline and 10+ years of related experience
• Experience with embedded firmware for real time state machine control
• Knowledge of electrical and other regulatory compliance standards, as well as testing and certification process
• Experience in product development of complex, precision instruments from concept through production; low volume capital equipment experience a plus
• Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them to product design

Desired Experience:

• Design for safety, reliability, service, manufacturability
• Extensive experience with complex, precision, computer controlled instruments
• Robotics, especially related to silicon or glass substrate handling
• Operating under design controls (medical device) a plus
• PCB and cable fabrication experience a plus
