Bioinformatician (Systems Biology/Pharmacology)

European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI)
Job Location:
Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK
Job Description:

We are seeking an outstanding individual to contribute to the development of representation standards in the field of model-based drug discovery and their software support, within the BioModels project at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

Pharmacokinetics and pharmodynamics are disciplines which rely heavily on quantitative models of drug administration and action. To share and re-use the models throughout the drug development pipeline requires standard descriptions of model and associated data.

As our successful candidate you will join an exciting collaboration between several of the largest pharmaceutical industries and many of the expert academic European groups. Within the Drug Disease Model Resources (DDMoRe) consortium, you will contribute to the improvement of markup languages and associated metadata in modelling and simulation environments, as well as develop software to support them.

EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. We are a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.

At EMBL-EBI we provide a dynamic, international working environment and have close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. EMBL-EBI staff enjoy many benefits including excellent sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, an active sports and social club and an attractive working environment set in 55 acres of parkland.

It is essential that you hold a degree in Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Computing Science. You must possess former experience in the field of modeling and simulation and be familiarity with standard formats used in life sciences.

We need someone who has prior experience of software development in Java and optionally other main programming languages. Knowledge of XML technologies is mandatory, experience in language specification development and familiar with UML would be a plus.

We are looking for an individual who can work well in a highly international, team-oriented environment and collaborate closely with external partners. Excellent communication skills are required.
