Agilent Laboratories, the corporate research center for Agilent Technologies, is seeking a researcher in the field of mass spectrometry and ionization with experience developing novel ionization methods and mass spectrometry systems. Agilent Laboratories is located on Agilent's main campus in Santa Clara, CA in the heart of the dynamic Silicon Valley.
The successful candidate will be involved in the development of ion sources for mass spectrometry systems as part of the Molecular Detection team in Agilent Laboratories' central research center. This is your opportunity to join a multidisciplinary group of scientists developing state-of-the-art measurement technologies to investigate complex chemical and biological systems

Core responsibilities for this position include:
-Create, design and develop mass spectrometry systems, ion optics systems, and ionization sources
-Assemble and evaluate prototype systems, including all aspects of mass spectrometry, chromatography and vacuum systems
-Work with engineering team to implement designs
-Acquire and interpret data and diagnostics from ionization sources and mass analyzers
-Work closely with development and applications scientists to create analytical solutions
-Take responsibility for assigned projects from inception to completion
-Maintain appropriate laboratory notebooks, write research reports, periodically present work to the R&D team as well as to the management team.
-Support preparation of patent applications to protect proprietary technology
-Present results at technical meetings and/or publish in peer-review journals


Required Qualifications:
-Ph.D. in physics, applied physics, chemistry or related engineering discipline
-Experience with developing vacuum/ambient ion optics and interfaces using SIMION or equivalent simulator
-Experience reconfiguring commercial analytical equipment to accommodate expanded capabilities including hands-on prototyping skills
-Experience with the acquisition and interpretation of data from various ionization devices and mass spectrometry systems
-Demonstrated system level thinking, including strong analytical skills and decision making ability
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-Excellent track record of scientific achievement as demonstrated by publications and scientific presentations or patents and product release
-Enthusiasm for working in a diverse, demanding, collaborative, and exciting technology environment
-Demonstrated initiative and creativity is a must
-Strong work ethic and team player attributes

The following skills and experience are high desired:
-Specific expertise in gas-discharge physics, such as embodied by microplasmas, lighting devices and plasma displays
-Experience in the design and implementation of ion sources for mass spectrometry
-Demonstrated mechanical and electrical engineering skills
