We are seeking an outstanding bioinformatician to join the Proteomics Services Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, near Cambridge, in the UK.
The bioinformatician will participate in the EU funded project: Infrastructure for Systems Biology in Europe (ISBE), see: http://isbe.eu/. The aim is to create a distributed, interconnected infrastructure which will integrate and synergise systems biology across Europe by making state of the art experimental and computational biological systems analysis widely available to European life scientists.
The post-holder's responsibilities will evolve around model and data management for Systems Biology, including tasks such as surveying the state of the art and best practices, collaboration with standardisation activities, development of illustrative case studies, identification of showcases illustrating the impact of modelling on biological discovery and the added-value of integrated theoretical-experimental research, and engagement with the community.
Duties will involve working with BioModels Database see: http://www.ebi.ac.uk/biomodels/, a public repository hosting mathematical models of biological processes. BioModels Database freely distributes extensively tested and annotated models encoded in standard formats, such as the Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML), see: http://sbml.org/. More specifically, the post-holder will perform some curation work, which entails encoding, verifying and annotating (cross-referencing model components with external data resources and ontologies) models available in the scientific literature.
The post-holder will join the team behind BioModels Database (which develops tools, services, formats and ontologies for the scientific community) as well as the ISBE consortium.
EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. We are a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.
The successful candidate will be initially offered a 2 years contract, with possibility for extension depending on funding availability.
At EMBL-EBI we provide a dynamic, international working environment and have close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. EMBL-EBI staff enjoy many benefits including excellent sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, an active sports and social club and an attractive working environment set in 55 acres of parkland.
