Job Description: 

SUMMARY
VARI is currently seeking to hire an individual to organize and provide operational management of the confocal core technology. This individual would be responsible for managing daily operations including scheduling, setting and approving user access, training, instruction, assisting in experimental design, maintenance, technological presentations and supervise technical staff.

FUNCTIONS
 Participates in the design, development, and implementation of the confocal core and responsible for assisting the Director in developing and overseeing the infrastructure for this program including a quality management, procedures/processes/protocols and appropriate access for research purposes, as well as operational staff recruitment, training and supervision.
 Ensure proper maintenance of technology, keeping key equipment in excellent working and operational condition.
 Provide state of the art confocal service to the community of VARI scientists.
 Provide training to scientists and laboratory personnel for user-operator use of the technology.
 Participate in the analysis and interpretation of confocal data.
 Write and prepare technical information for grant and contracts.
 Develop and manage budgets with the Director of Core Technologies.
 Participate in the development of externally funded operations, including grant and contract applications.
 Manage schedules for confocal equipment users.
 Ensure compliance with VARI Core Facility procedures.
 Conducts presentations of confocal services to VARI staff
 Communicate with and provide confocal core data and reports to the Director of Core Technologies.
 Recruit and manage staff assuring appropriate training and education for duties assigned, and encourage National Certifications where needed and appropriate.
 Perform all other duties as assigned.

POSITION STATUS: Full-time, exempt. Salary will be commensurate with education, relevant work experience, and other qualifications.

Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS
 Ph.D. in relevant field (e.g. Cell Biology), with a minimum of 2-3 years postdoctoral experience including significant microscopy work as evidenced by at least one peer-reviewed publication or equivalent experience in the field of confocal microscopy.
 Previous leadership/management experience (i.e. postdoctoral or graduate associations, lab teams, organizational committees, or extensive confocal microscopy technical positions) as well as previous experience overseeing Core Facility operations.
 Ability to consult/assist/facilitate experimental design and optimization including both sample preparation and imaging.
 Prior experience with microcopy analysis software and techniques (NIS Elements and ImageJ preferred, other software acceptable).
 Demonstrated experience with microcopy analysis software and techniques and ability to consult/assist/facilitate experimental design and optimization including both sample preparation and imaging.
 Ability to assist with figure design and layout software such as Canvas or Adobe Illustrator.
 Familiar with Microsoft Office including Word and Excel for billing purposes.
 Demonstrated leadership, collaboration and communications skills and a track record reflecting attention to detail and organization.
 Prior training or teaching and grant writing and submission experience, with a funding track record preferred but not required.
