We are looking for a person to lead the InterPro and EBI Metagenomics resources at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) into the next phase of their development. InterPro is a widely used and highly cited resource for the analysis of proteins. InterPro aggregates content from its member databases, which currently includes Pfam, PROSITE, PRINTS, SMART, Panther, TIGRfams, PIRSF, Gene3D, SUPERFAMILY and HAMAP. InterPro has been widely used for annotating the flood of new protein sequences using its tools InterProScan and InterPro2GO. EBI Metagenomics is a resource collecting, archiving and analysing Next Generation Sequence data from environmental samples. Both resources are developed and maintained by the InterPro team.
The Team Leader will be responsible for all aspects of the InterPro and Metagenomics resources. This will include managing the quality and quantity of data in each resource, ensuring timeliness of data delivery and excellent access to the data through websites, web services and downloadable tools. Additionally, the post holder is expected to obtain grant funding to support further development of the resources. The team leader will also ensure smooth communication with the collaborators and the external user community, as well as within the team, to facilitate the solving of technical problems, to ensure efficient data flow and to meet user demands.
The post holder will report to the Head of Protein Sequence Resources (Dr. Alex Bateman) and the Head of Genes, Genomes and Variation (Dr. Paul Flicek) and will work closely with other team leaders at EMBL-EBI to deliver the Institute’s mission. We would expect the successful candidate to have significant management experience of biological database provision, including a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of delivering database resources.
EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and is Europe's leading provider of information services to biological researchers in academia and industry.
The team leader will have a degree in a relevant subject and is likely to also have a higher degree.
The ideal candidate will have at least three years management experience within a biological database environment and will have experience of SCRUM software development practice.
The InterPro Team Leader will have excellent communication and writing skills. She/he will have excellent leadership skills and will ensure the team develop their skills and knowledge. In addition, the candidate will show a balance between being quality conscious while ensuring timely delivery of projects and data.
The candidate will be expected to lead by example and have excellent computing and software development skills. Excellent knowledge of relational database software is essential. The InterPro codebase is mainly written in Java and Python and an understanding of these technologies would be an advantage.
EMBL is an inclusive employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. EMBL-EBI provides a dynamic, international working environment and has close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. EMBL-EBI staff enjoy many benefits including excellent sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, an active sports and social club and an attractive working environment set in 55 acres of parkland.
