Job Description: 

Bio-Rad, a world leader in life science research and clinical diagnostics products, has an immediate need for a Sr. Mechanical Engineer.

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer-Plastics Design will work in our DigitalBiologyCenter in Pleasanton, CA. The DigitalBiologyCenter is focused on applications of Droplet Digital technology.

Specific responsibilities include:

•Conceive and design of high-volume, injection-molded lab consumables and plastic enclosures
•Design and support of formed plastics
•Develop molded parts to replace precision, machined parts
•Select materials based on mechanical, optical, chemical compatibility, cosmetic and other properties
•Develop requirements and specifications, test methods and documentation
•Work with supply chain to release the parts and processes into sustainable manufacturing environments
•Receive and test first articles, drive process optimization and complete final qualification
•Act as technical lead for the product releases
•Sustain products over their lifetimes – monitor capacity and initiate cost reduction projects
•Prepare and make presentations

Requirements: 

•BS (MS preferred) in mechanical engineering or closely-related discipline
•8 or more years experience in design of injection-molded plastic in medical, life-sciences or consumer products
•5+ years experience with solid-modeling software (SolidWorks preferred)
•Extensive knowledge of polymer properties, especially those used in the medical and life sciences industries
•Experience with FEA, mold-flow and other simulation tools in product development
•Practical knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
•Use modeling and other analytic tools to predict and optimize performance

Desired:

•Experience with design of injection-molded, micro-fluidic parts a strong plus
•Experience with life-sciences or medical instrumentation a plus
•Experience with quality-improvement methodologies, such as Six Sigma, a plus
