Job Description: 

This position is within the Division of IT in the Technology Architecture and Research Services Department. This is a great opportunity with a major research university to collaboratively establish and grow a shared high performance computing service in support of a fast growing research profile.
The High Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist will provide direct support to the genomics researchers to ensure efficient and effective use of high performance computing resources. This includes initial on‐boarding and training, experiment analysis and code optimization, and regular outreach efforts by means of tutorials, trainings, design of web-access front ends for genomics software and collaborative discussions. The HPC Specialist works closely with the HPC Administrator to coordinate operational maintenance and support for the environment.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 4-6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. This position requires a background check including Criminal History Screening, Education/Degree/Certifications Verification, Social Security Number Trace, Sex Offender Registry Search, Prior Employment Verification, and Credit.

Requirements: 

Desired Qualifications:
• Degree in computer science, biology or related scientific field with computational experience.
• Experience with bioinformatics or computational biology, scientific computing algorithms and statistical techniques.
• Familiarity with a variety of the HPC subject area concepts and practices in the context of academic research, to include basic understanding of sponsored research compliance requirements.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to prepare and present comprehensive presentations to IT and genomics researchers.
• Demonstrated experience working in an environment with rapidly changing job priorities.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience with both high-level programming languages such as Perl/Python and lower level ones such as C/C++, Java and Fortran.
• Expertise with combining a number of algorithms in pipelines with source control management, testing and monitoring.
• Knowledge of next generation sequence technology and analysis and with the Python, Perl, Java and C programming languages.
• Experience with coding for a distributed computing environment, to include utilization of CPU and GPU-based HPC environments as well as parallel file systems such as Lustre.
• Experience with administering and utilizing UNIX-based operating systems.
