Job Description: 

Formulates, develops, or modifies complex information systems to analyze genome sequence and other related data.

*Prepares detailed specifications and algorithms from which programs will be written.
*Applies existing custom bioinformatics software to both well-defined and moderately complex problems.
*Designs, codes, tests, debugs, and maintains programs and research software for bioinformatics applications.
*Researches, assesses, imports, configures, and customizes third-party bioinformatics software.
*Advises on hardware and software decisions related to efficient application of implemented software.
*May provide technical guidance and work direction to lower level bioinformatics and information systems personnel.


Required: Bachelor or Master's degree in Computer Science or Biological Sciences.

Required: At least two years of experience in scientific programming with applications in genome research or a Master's degree in Computer Science.
Required: Programming in a UNIX/LINUX environment. Experience in Perl, Python, Ruby, Java or similar.
Preferred: Experience with UNIX/LINUX computing clusters.
Preferred: Next-gen sequencing experience.

About Our Organization: 

The BCM Human Genome Sequencing Center employs more than 200 staff, and is located in Houston, in the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical complex.

The major activity of the BCM-HGSC is high-throughput DNA sequence generation and the accompanying analysis. The center currently operates multiple sequencing platforms (Illumina, Ion Torrent, 454, Sanger). The sequence data generated by these machines is analyzed in a complex bioinformatics pipeline, and the data are deposited regularly in the public databases at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). This ensures that the worldwide research community has timely access to the data.

The BCM-HGSC is also involved in developing the next generation of DNA sequencing and bioinformatics technologies that will allow greater scientific advances in the future.
