We are seeking a motivated and capable bioinformatician/programmer to join the HGNC (HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee) at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) on the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridge in the UK.
HGNC (www.genenames.org) is the only worldwide authority assigning standardised human gene symbols and names, and has three key goals; providing unique standardised nomenclature for every human gene; ensuring this information is freely available, widely disseminated and universally used; and most recently, ensuring this nomenclature is expanded and utilised across vertebrate genomes. This third aim will be the focus on this role, creating a relational database and web portal for curating and displaying standardised gene names across multiple vertebrate species.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in bioinformatics and be educated to MSc or PhD level (or equivalent) in biological science or a related subject, preferably with knowledge of phylogenetics and existing bioinformatic tools such as BLAST. An excellent working knowledge of relational databases and website design is required and experience of some or all of the following would be a distinct advantage: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Perl CGI, CMS (Drupal), jQuery.
The post holder will enjoy working in a team environment and ideally have experience of collaborating with external groups, and will possess excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
