Layer, Chiang, et al. Genome Biology
The Ensembl project, a leading-edge international database providing genomic annotation to the scientific community, seeks an exceptionally talented and motivated project leader to lead our efforts in comparative genomics. The post will be based at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) which is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
The Ensembl Compara team aims to develop and apply new and established methods for whole genome sequence alignment, assignment of gene families and annotation of orthologs and paralogs as part of the Ensembl gene trees. The team is also responsible for building the compara databases for each Ensembl release and development and maintenance of the compara MySQL databases and Perl APIs.
The comparative genomics project leader will be responsible for setting the direction and priorities of Ensembl Compara and will be expected to participate in major international genomics projects. Additional responsibilities include representing the Compara team and Ensembl at internal and external meetings, working with the Ensembl and user to develop effective data displays, hiring and training staff and participation in the overall leadership of the Ensembl project.
Working on Ensembl at EMBL-EBI provides access to an international collection of projects at the leading edge of bioinformatics. EMBL-EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).
The ideal candidate should hold a Ph.D. in genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics or other relevant field or a master's degree in one of these topics with significant experience in the field. Management experience as well as established recognition in the field of comparative genomics experience is desirable but not essential.
The post holder must have extensive bioinformatics experience, including experience with relational databases, object-orientated Perl programming and familiarity with high throughput DNA sequencing data. Additional programming experience in C or Python would be an advantage as would experience with the existing Ensembl code base, API and data analysis pipelines.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with excellent English language, communication and interpersonal skills.
