Job Description:

Van Andel Research Institute’s Laboratory for Translational Medicine has a position available for one Postdoctoral Fellow.

This postdoctoral position is available immediately for a highly motivated Ph.D. graduate with the appropriate experience and track record in the fields of bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related discipline. The postdoctoral fellow will become a key member of a multi-disciplinary team focused on the incorporation of molecular technologies and data modeling methodologies into tools for target/drug discovery, and real-time decision support tools for personalized medicine applications.

Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) provides postdoctoral training opportunities to scientists beginning their research careers. The fellowships are to help promising scientists advance their knowledge and research experience and at the same time support the research endeavors of VARI under the mentorship of a VARI Faculty member. Postdoctoral fellows are appointed for a limited period of time, usually three years but no more than five years.

While this project is currently funded, an integral part of postdoctoral training is the process of preparing a research proposal and writing a fellowship application. All VARI Postdoctoral Fellows are encouraged to apply for external funding as soon as it is practical and reasonable after hire. Receiving a fellowship award provides recognition for both the fellow and VARI.

Position Status: Full-time, non-exempt

Salary Range: Salary determined based on Doctorate/MD receipt date according to a set stipend schedule, which begins at $40,000 up to a maximum of $48,000.

A successful candidate is a motivated and enthusiastic scientist who enjoys working in a fast-paced collaborative laboratory environment. He or she must be able to prioritize and exhibit exceptional research productivity.

 A Ph.D. in the field of Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics or another relevant scientific discipline.
 Proficiency in specific software (e.g. BWA, Bowtie, Cufflinks) and workflows used for the adoption of transcriptomics and NextGen Sequencing (RNASeq, whole genome and exome Sequencing) and its potential application in clinical practice.
 Proficient in Linux operating systems tools, tool installation and basic file management
 Familiarity with a range of algorithmic methods used to identify therapeutic agents on the basis of molecular profiling technologies (e.g. connectivity map, systems biology tools, COXEN, etc).
 Expertise in systems biology would be a strength.
 Strong computational and communication skills.
 Successful recruitment visit and seminar presentation and at least three (3) letters of recommendation. (In the case of candidates located outside of North America, the requirement for a seminar may be waived.)
