Job Description: 

We are seeking an experienced Software Developer to support research in the field of computational modelling. The position is located within the team at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, near Cambridge, in the UK.

The post-holder will join a team developing formats, ontologies, tools and services for the scientific community, and work on the software infrastructure behind BioModels Database (, the main repository of peer-reviewed, published, computational models. (S)He will develop software to support the storage, versioning, retrieval, display and conversion of models encoded in markup languages, and associated metadata.

The Software Developer will need to interact with the other developers and curators of the resource, as well as the community at large, specially the developers of the related formats and tools. (S)He will also need to provide support for the resource (documentation, presentations, tutorials, etc.).

EMBL-EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.


Applicants must hold a degree in computing or biological science or a related subject, preferably with an interest in biological data.

A good knowledge of software development with Java and/or Groovy is required, as well as familiarity with Linux environments. Prior experience with relational databases, XML, application servers, Javascript libraries, and webservices is desirable. A good knowledge of the field of modelling and simulation and standard formats used in life sciences would be appreciated.
