J. Craig Venter Institute (“JCVI”), a dynamic non-profit scientific research organization, is currently seeking a Controller. This position is responsible for coordinating monthly and year end closing processes, performing internal audits, maintaining fiscal records and preparing financing statements. This position reports to our CFO and works collaboratively with the Sr. Manager for Institute Budget Planning and Analysis and the Director, Sponsored Projects.
The Controller manages general accounting, property accounting and internal auditing for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including, but not limited to, internal and external financial statements, monthly job reports and annual audits. This position is responsible for reviewing the financial statements and supporting schedules and showing progress against budget. Additionally, the position will review and develop accounting policies and procedures which verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data to ensure compliance with regulations and the accurate classification of data. The Controller is the primary point of contact for the independent auditors and outside accountants, working closely with accountants in the preparation of the annual tax returns as well. This position will take primary responsibility for the management of the ERP solution in addition to the management of cash, fixed assets, and grants and accounts receivable.

Successful candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and CPA. Minimum of eight to ten years’ experience performing similar and supervisory experience is required. Experience working with grants, government contracts and sub-contracts, as well as knowledge of FAR, CAS, OMB A-122 and A-133 Circulars and experience with Deltek Costpoint and Cognos is required. Strong understanding of job cost accounting, cost pools and indirect rate calculations necessary. Candidates should also have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be an independent thinker and analytical problem solver.
