Bioinformatician/Web Developer

Job Location:
Hinxton near Cambridge, UK
Job Description:

We are looking to recruit a Bioinformatician/Web Developer to join the RNAcentral project at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBI-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

RNAcentral is an emerging global consortium of expert databases specialising in particular types of RNA molecules, aimed at developing a world-class resource providing access to sequence and annotation of non-coding RNA. The EBI and collaborators at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute have been funded to establish a core infrastructure for the archiving, classification, interconnection and integrative display of the sequences studied by the consortium members.

To carry out this work, we are looking to appoint a Bioinformatician/Web Developer. The post-holder will develop a database and integration pipelines to bring together data supplied by the RNAcentral expert databases and archived in the ENA; and develop a web portal providing views of these data, supporting access to the consortium members’ more specialist sites. The web portal will be developed using the Drupal content management system, which is in use by EMBL-EBI for similar applications. The appointee will work primarily with another bioinformatician dedicated to the project, but both post-holders will be fully embedded within appropriate EBI service teams.

Aside from their technical responsibilities, the post holder will be expected to work with other consortium members, contribute to the development of standards for data representation and exchange, represent the team at international meetings, give presentations, contribute to training materials and courses both internally and externally, and produce project specific and general user documentation.

Applicants should have at least two years bioinformatics experience in a research or production environment. A first degree in biology/bioinformatics and a relevant higher degree such as an MSc in Bioinformatics or Computer Science, PhD or equivalent work experience are required. Prior experience of web development is essential; specific experience with Drupal is desirable but not essential. Prior experience of programming or scripting is also essential and a solid working knowledge of Perl is required. Prior experience of bioinformatics applications, or RNA biology, will both be advantageous to applicants.

The post requires strong self-motivation and excellent communication skills, as the post holders will need to coordinate with each other and across team boundaries; and also with the RNAcentral coordinator and expert databases.

EMBL-EBI provides a dynamic, international working environment and has close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. EMBL-EBI staff enjoy many benefits including excellent sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, an active sports and social club and an attractive working environment set in 55 acres of parkland.
