We are looking for a highly motivated Java Software Developer to work in the Proteomics Services Team on the Reactome portal for biomolecular pathways. The position is at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBI-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
The post involves development of data integration tools, user and web service interfaces, and data management and integration. In particular, we would like to explore the synergies between Reactome, Rhea, the Enzyme Portal and ChEBI, to provide users with access to pathway, reaction and compound data in an intuitive way.
EMBL-EBI provides cutting edge research and services for biomolecular data. We provide a dynamic, international working environment and has close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. EMBL-EBI staff enjoy many benefits including excellent sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, an active sports and social club and an attractive working environment set in 55 acres of parkland.
Applicants should have a degree in a relevant field (ideally with background knowledge in biology/biochemistry) or proven professional experience. Profound knowledge of Java is essential. Experience in several of the following fields would be highly desirable: Relational databases (in particular, MySQL), data management, user interface development, servlets, GWT and Perl. It would be helpful if candidates are already familiar with an IDE, such as Eclipse or IntelliJ.
The post has a strong inter-group communication component, and Reactome itself is a project distributed over three sites and two continents. Good communication and interpersonal skills as well as a good working knowledge of English are therefore essential. The post holder should be able to work independently and interact well within a team environment.
