EMBL-EBI staff enjoy many benefits including excellent sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, an active sports and social club and an attractive working environment set in 55 acres of parkland
The Vertebrate Genomics Team and the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) seek an experienced and motivated bioinformatician to join our resequencing informatics effort, in particular to develop and deploy data analysis methods and processing pipelines for our growing collection of human disease data sets resulting from large-scale exome and whole genome sequencing projects. These data represent some of the most comprehensive ever collected for biological and disease research and their analysis requires significantly creative approaches.
The Vertebrate Genomics Team at the EBI is an international hub of human variation data as its major projects include the 1000 Genomes data coordination centre, the European Genotype Archive, and the Ensembl project. The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK.
The ideal candidate will have a masters or PhD degree in computer science, genetics or bioinformatics and significant experience in bioinformatics.
Experience with methods used for the analysis of human variation data including SNP calling, imputation and similar methods will be an advantage, as will experience with data analysis using virtual machines and cloud computing infrastructure.
The successful candidate will be self-motivated and capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientists in an international academic environment. She/he should enjoy the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field. Excellent communication skills are essential.
The post holder must be comfortable working in a UNIX/Linux environment and must be an accomplished programmer. Experience with data analysis pipelines and large compute clusters is helpful but not required.
EMBL-EBI provides a dynamic, international working environment and has close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
