We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated Software Engineer to join the Functional Genomics Software Development Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
The post holder will work with a team of other software engineers, bioinformaticians and statisticians on a variety of tasks related to a new large EU project devoted to constructing infrastructure for chemical safety data. The successful candidate will be responsible for technical aspects of establishing and maintaining a data management system. Existing open source software solutions will be used, alongside with custom development as necessary. A data management system will be built in collaboration with a computational biologist.
The main responsibilities will include:
- installing and configuring data management software components;
- working with the computational biologist and other project partners on customizing and improving the system as necessary;
- system maintenance.
EMBL-EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. The Functional Genomics Group is coordinating the informatics for a number of collaborative European projects in epidemiology and molecular biology. We contribute to those projects by providing data collection, validation, storage and integration infrastructure.

The ideal candidate has a degree in computer science, mathematics, IT, bioinformatics, bioengineering or a related field, or has equivalent experience, and has a strong interest in software design and engineering.
The post holder should be able to work in a small team, to take initiative as necessary, to think independently and creatively, and to adapt to a fast-moving scientific environment. An enthusiasm for solving challenging problems is a must. Ability to efficiently communicate with other group members (software developers and biologists) is important; this includes documentation writing.
