Sequencing and Analysis of the Hydra Genome
Chapman, Kirkness et al., Nature
An international research collaboration reports their sequencing and analysis of the Hydra magnipapillata genome, and compare it to the genomes of several other organisms. "The Hydra genome has been shaped by bursts of transposable element expansion, horizontal gene transfer, trans-splicing, and simplification of gene structure and gene content that parallel simplification of the Hydra life cycle," the authors write. They team suggests that comparisons of the Hydra genome to the reported sequences of other animals have helped them to elucidate the evolution of several of the organism's characteristics.
Erasmus to Serve as Biobase Center of Excellence
NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) – Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and Biobase will establish a center that will offer data analysis and other services to customers in the Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg, the company said today.
The center of excellence at Erasmus MC will focus on offering Biobase's data analysis offerings, as well as hands-on training at Erasmus MC and support services, Biobase said. The company's Biobase Knowledge Library and ExPlain Analysis System are used for exploring biological data and studying transcription profiles.
"By sharing our experience in bioinformatics research and development with such a reputable institution, we will help researchers to better understand their microarray, proteomics, and next generation sequencing data, while continuously improving our tools according to the needs of leading-edge research," Biobase CSO and President Edgar Wingender said in statement.
Financial terms of the agreement were not released.
