The Tweet Question

At Adventures in Ethics and Science, Janet Stemwedel asks the age-old question: "To tweet or not to tweet?" In particular, she focuses on whether it is appropriate to live tweet professional conferences."If pressed for a blanket statement on whether tweeting a conference presentation is OK or not OK, I would say: it depends," Stemwedel writes. She notes that different disciplines have different customs, and that those changes over time. She then offers "tweet-sized bites" of arguments in favor and against conference tweeting, including:

Tweeting a meeting is a way to include members of the professional community who didn't have the funds or flexibility to be there [in real life]. … Worry: conference tweeters distracted from engaging with speakers, people in room, & asking questions there. Some folks are not on Twitter!
