For the Remodel

Over the years, the needs of labs change. At Advance, Karen Nichols, a technologist at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, writes about the decision to update the 40-year-old lab there and the beginnings of the remodel process. "Trying to squeeze new instruments in and around the workbenches provided was getting more difficult," she writes, adding that all the heat those machines produced was also becoming a problem. With input from the staff, the first phase of the project aimed to "streamline the workflow," and they also plan to make the lab "more lean."

"Getting input from all the staff has proved invaluable," Nichols adds. "While our process may be slower than others, we have come up with some really great ideas that have already decreased turnaround time and streamlined our work flow even more."
