Very true and a shame. First

Very true and a shame. First of course there's the need to build a voluminous publication record for tenure and credibility. Can't aford to be wrong there. Then there is the related issue of ensuring grants. Can't afford to be wrong there. Then of course there is the overriding issue of the pleasure taken by many simple minds in excoriating someone who was unsuccessful or wrong. Ironically the freedom from "competition" thus attained by those simple minds is usually wasted on non-creative work because that is what they are capable of.
