Practically Speaking

The shift toward open access to scientific research is moving apace, but SciDev's David Dickson writes at The Guardian that "enthusiasm must be tempered by an awareness of what can realistically be achieved, and of the pace of change required to ensure a rush to open access does not have unwanted side-effects."

Dickson notes that the intermediary step of setting of open repositories of scientific paperes, or the green route, shouldn't be skipped in favor of pursuing the gold open-access route of immediate access to articles, usually through author fees.

Further, he adds, that such fees should not become an impediment, particularly if researchers in the developing world are to benefit. Some journals may be able to waive the fee, but local journals in the developing world may not have that capacity.
