Open Source Software Market

By Matthew Dublin

A new effort coordinated by the European Middleware Initiative (EMI) aims to assist scientific communities in the search for the software they need to carry out their research. Called ScienceSoft, the initiative is currently in an early development phase but is currently setup to promote the development and use of open source software for scientific research. This open source community could prove to be a one-stop shop marketplace for researchers to easily find open source software that suits their needs. ScienceSoft will eventually feature catalogues with software services, a skills database, and a citation system to allow software to be reference in papers.

Until June 2012, ScienceSoft will be soliciting ideas from community members, editors, and developers to offer advice on functionality, content, and implementation.

If you are interested in joining the community and contributing your ideas can register at http://sciencesoft.org/join
