The Next Stage

The Boston-based Partners HealthCare System plans to implement whole-genome sequencing and interpretation of that data for its hospitals next month, The Boston Globe reports. Its nine hospitals include Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital. The Globe adds that the service is expected to cost about $9,000.

Prior to launching the service, the hospital system has partnered with Illumina to include its GeneInsight software, which was developed in part to help with data interpretation, with Illumina's MiSeq machine. Currently, the Globe adds, that software-machine combo is being used in a few pilot projects for targeted gene testing.

"As an academic medical center, we can differentiate ourselves around interpreting genetic data," says Trung Do, executive director of business development at Partners.
