Lineagen to Launch Autism Test Nationwide in Q1 2011

By Kirell Lakhman

Test maker Lineagen is field-testing its new autism diagnostic in California and Utah and expects to launch the assay nationwide in the first quarter of next year, according to the company's CEO.

The firm said the so-called FirstStep Dx test is meant to "enhance and accelerate the diagnostic assessment process leading to the diagnosis of" autism by relying on "previously undiscovered genetic factors associated with" the disorder.

CEO Michael Paul said the assay, which uses whole-genome chromosomal microarrays and Fragile X testing, is being performed by a national CLIA lab. He declined to name it.

Paul spoke with me today, about a week after privately held Lineagen announced it had completed its $10.8 million Series A financing round.

That statement said the company, which also concentrates on tests for multiple sclerosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, would "commercially launch" the assay this month.
