HPC for Dummies

By Matthew Dublin

If you feel like getting your HPC learn on, you're in luck — the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe has produced 16 HPC training videos that are freely available for download. These videos were originally shot at a workshop on porting and performance tuning at the IT Center for Science in Finland and a Cray XTD code-porting workshop at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center back in June and July, respectively. The CSC workshop covered numerous challenges associated with porting and tuning codes on the PRACE prototypes as well as new programming models suited for future petaflop supercomputers. The Cray meeting consisted of a series of lectures on advanced code optimization and porting techniques for the Cray architecture and MPI optimization strategies as well as profiling using CrayPat and Apprentice2 tools.

In other news, it's finally here: an HPC book for dummies (the author was kind enough to choose this over an "Idiot's Guide" title). High Performance Computing for Dummies was penned by Doug Edaline, the main monkey over at Cluster Monkey, and is sponsored by Sun. Despite its name, this is actually a good primer for those HPC virgins out there, so have a look-see.
