Connection Between Epigenome, Selective Mutability, Evolution, and Human Disease
Li, Harris et al., PLoS Genetics
Researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine and elsewhere propose a "connection between the epigenome, selective mutability, evolution, and human disease" based on the findings of their study on associations of structural mutability with germline DNA methylation and with non-allelic homologous recombination mediated by low-copy repeats. "Combined evidence from four human sperm methylome maps, human genome evolution, structural polymorphisms in the human population, and previous genomic and disease studies consistently points to a strong association of germline hypomethylation and genomic instability," the Baylor-led team writes.
Eyeing Northern Calif. Market, Pathology Holdings Buys Central Coast Clinical Labs
Los-Angeles-based Pathology Holdings yesterday said it has acquired Central Coast Clinical Laboratories to help it expand north into California's Central Coast region, which stretches between LA and the Bay Area.
Pathology Holdings is the parent company of Pathology, Inc., its "flagship lab" and one of the largest women's-health labs on the West Coast, PH said in a statement.
Pathology specializes in testing for OB/GNs through its liquid-based Pap testing and associated MDx and computer-assisted interpretation. It also provides clinical lab services to dermatologists, urologists, gastroenterologists, family practitioners, surgery and endoscopy centers, hospitals, and independent labs.
Pathology's two CLIA labs are located in Torrance and Monrovia, Calif., south and east, respectively, of LA.
Its acquisition of CCCL will likely make a neat fit because its menu focuses on OB/GYNs, family practitioners, primary-care physicians, gastroenterologists, urologists, and dermatologists.
CCCL, a CLIA lab founded in 2003, is located in Templeton, Calif., equidistant between LA and San Francisco. It offers its services to physicians and medical facilities in San Luis Obispo County.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
