Epigenomics to Launch Lung Cancer MDx in EU 'Within Next Few Weeks'
Epigenomics today said it plans to launch real-time PCR-based lung cancer diagnostic in the European Union "within the next few weeks."
The Epi proLung BL reflex assay determines the DNA-methylation status of the SHOX2 gene in bronchial lavage samples taken from patients with suspected lung cancer.
Increased DNA methylation of the gene indicates the presence of "malignant lung disease," Epigenomics said, adding that the test's intended use is "as an aid" in diagnosing lung cancer.
The assay could help pathologists definitively diagnose lung cancer because cytological and histological analyses of bronchial lavage material fail to confirm around half of all suspected cancer cases.
Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the EU, accounting for almost 260,000 newly diagnosed cases in 2004. The incidence of the disease has peaked among men, but continues to rise among women.
