Salary Slump in Academia

Nature reports that nearly one third of faculty members at universities in the US saw a reduction in their salaries in 2009-10. The median pay cut was three percent, according to the survey, which was conducted by the Knoxville-based University Professional Association for Human Resources. Nature adds that the average salary for a professor in the biological and biomedical sciences was $91,184 in 2009-10. The report states that about 21 percent of faculty respondents who did not receive pay cuts, didn't receive raises either.
