Human Genetic Variation Alters Anthrax Toxin Sensitivity
Martchenko, Candille et al., PNAS
Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine show that genetic variation affecting capillary morphogenesis gene 2, or CMG2, dramatically alters toxin sensitivity in humans. In its analysis, the team reports on "a CMG2 single-nucleotide polymorphism occurring frequently in African and European populations [that they found] independently altered toxin uptake." The group goes on to suggest "testing of genomically characterized human cell populations may offer a broadly useful strategy for elucidating effects of genetic variation on infectious disease susceptibility."
Keep It Professional
BitesizeBio's Travis Medley has a few tips for handling the phone while you are on the job hunt. "You want the entire experience to exude professionalism," he says, to kick off his list of what not to do. First, don't be funny on your voicemail message and don't use that automated voice. "This type of message always makes me wonder if I dialed the number correctly, and if the person will actually get the message. It's cryptic and unfriendly," Medley says. His other tips include keeping the kids away from answering the cell phone and not having a ringback tone.
