The Worst Form of Peer Review, Except for All the Others

Based on a British study of peer review, Science Insider asks how secret peer review should be. The survey found that 84 percent of respondents think "without peer review there would be no control in scientific communication" but that 32 percent say "it is the best that can be achieved." Nature's the Great Beyond blog adds that the respondents weren't sure how to make the process better. Of ways to improve peer review, 76 percent thought that a double-blind process might be better whereas 20 percent supported an open review.

Science Insider points out that Nature tried open peer review in 2006 and it, according to Nature at the time, was "not widely popular."
